Children denied health care, education, abused girl child, homeless kids, child sex prostitutes, and child marriage victims are Mugabe’s legacy and our responsibility as Zimbabweans
Many Zimbabweans suffered under Mugabe’s oppressive authority which saw the despot monopolise wealth and power. As Zimbabweans we should be proud and show the whole world how our Christian, peaceful united protests with the military on our side and the corrupt police and CIO pushed aside, western world , African Union and Sadc sidelined, peacefully removed a most feared 93 year old ruthless dictator who had ruled for 37 years.
We however must now face the reality that, yes we are agreeable to the new President Emmerson Mnangagwa ruling Zimbabwe during the last few months, just about six months left of Zanu pf’s mandate to rule before the next elections.
The country should be led to a free, fair , peaceful democratic election in the next six months. The opposition, who like Sadc and AU have spent a lot of the last 17 years cementing Mugabe’s rule through their lack of unity with the people, must now focus on preparing for the next election.
Opposition and activists must not drop their guard but rather use the window of opportunity to give the people of Zimbabwe, education and training on holding a peaceful election, one to be proud of. We are setting the trend for not just Africa but the west whose idea of removing dictators is through the barrel of a gun,…we say no, People power can do that! Look at how we removed Mugabe.
We therefore call for an inclusive government that lends an ear to the people’s plight, and at the very least implements all electoral reforms that the former South African President Thabo Mbeki along with opposition leaders like Welshman Ncube and Morgan Tsvangirai agreed to and signed up to but unfortunately the Government of National Unity (GNU) of 2008 to 2013 failed to implement even a single agreed upon electoral reform while enjoying Monday morning tea with Mugabe.
In my view, yes we have all suffered but who do we identify with on the ground? It is the children of Zimbabwe denied health care and education, the abused girl child who was homeless, used in child sex prostitution, stopped in education and put in early child marriages because of what mugabe did to the motherland Zimbabwe.
They stood no chance in making it in life other that drink, drugs, crime, prostitution, child labour, child deaths, multiple births, no education, no housing, begging and a whole host of other issues that define us Zimbabweans as a shameful lot who sat back and allowed that to happen on these kids.
Many of these children have lost parents to HIV and are in some cases HIV positive themselves because of men who use them for sex. What a sad history it has been for Zimbabwe!
In the transition to a future democratic government at the next general election in six months, i say, if we managed to remove a dictator in six months, then those who looted from the motherland, especially the Gideon Gono , Obert Mpofu, Patrick Zhuwaos’ Mugabe family, Chiyangwa’s, Mnangagwa, Zanu pf stalwarts and securocrats must be brought to book over their crimes and forced to give back to government what they stole, for redistribution to those deserving.
The men who use the unfortunate children for child sex are known offenders who should be named and shamed, and their whereabouts identified so that they are brought to justice over this. We the people must be able to swiftly construct shelter in the form of safe secure boarding schools for these children with boarding facilities and the schools must be inclusive of those kids who have everything so that we are all one and learn to live together. Until we can feed, educate, house and care for these unfortunate children, we can’t claim to be moving Zimbabwe forward.
I feel Mugabes should have been allowed to walk amongst these children with no security and see if these children who have gone through unimaginable horrors, pain, torture, abuse, hunger, forced prostitution, crime and other and see if they would have been smiling at the Gushungo’s walking away with US$10 million, lifetime security and benefits of a president after putting them through such horrors. The children were left hungry, cold, wet, naked and living under bridges, on street corners under card board, in bins, under broken vehicles, surviving on crumbs thrown at them and road kill such as mice yet Mugabe, the cause of their demise is wal ing away with US$10 million
Yes Mugabe is a founding father of the nation but in my book, this is a true part of his legacy and what we should be fighting to remove now, because replacing Mugabe with Mnangagwa is recycling trash,..Mugabe has gone, Zanu pf stalwarts and securocrats must be removed democratically in the next six months,,..then and only then can we fully be proud to be Zimbabwean. Mnangagwa is ok in stabilising us to the next election but we must all unite and remove Zanu pf, stalwarts and securocrats and fully dismantle the corrupt network that has allowed them to loot billions from the motherland.
Future generations can never forgive us for allowing fellow Zimbabwean children to suffer this way under Mugabe’s dictatorship. Protect the girl child,..give all children opportunities and allow them to do what they can reach through good education, training and homes. These could easily be future, teachers, nurses, doctors, pilots, police and other if we prepare them whole heartedly for a better future. Who knows, the next president in a decade or so could be one of these children,…God works in different ways! DISCUSS! By Sibusiso Ngwenya
